Why Fair Trade coffee beans? With over 27 million acres of farmland worldwide dedicated to coffee production and an annual consumption of 12 BILLON pounds, coffee has become an extremely valued commodity. Fair Trade Certification empowers farmers and farm workers worldwide to lift themselves out of poverty by investing in their farms and communities, protecting the environment, and developing the business skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace. Fair Trade is much more than a fair price! Fair Trade principles include fair price, fair labor conditions, direct trade, democratic and transparent organizations, community development and the promotion of environmentally sustainable farming methods that protect farmers’ health and preserve valuable ecosystems for future generations. When you buy Fair Trade coffees, you are changing communities for the better.
Why organic? Organic coffee is generally agreed upon to have better taste. Organic coffee is an environmentally and socially responsible product. It's production helps protect valuable eco-systems and helps improve the lives of the growers and their families. Organic coffee is grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, instead using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility, reduce the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers and build biologically diverse agriculture.
Why shade grown coffee?
Taste - Coffee beans mature more slowly in the shade, increasing natural sugars and enhancing the flavor of the coffee.
Health - Next to tobacco, coffee is sprayed with more chemicals than any other product consumed by humans. Shade grown coffee is most often organically grown, free of chemical use. Shade coffee farms traditionally use little or no chemical fertilizer.
Environment - Shade grown coffee requires little or no chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. The shade trees filter carbon dioxide which causes global warming, and aid in soil moisture retention which minimizes erosion.
